Add option `Update to Oldest` to use the first printing of cards in a deck

I pretty much always prefer to use the first printing of cards in my decks, as they are usually the most recognizable and iconic. Currently, I have to change cards one-by-one or add the first printing as my Preferred Printing first, which is a pretty arduous and slow process.

I think an option titled Update to Oldest next to Update to Cheapest and Update to Preferred would be a nice way to simplify that process.

This as Update to Original would be sick. It seems like an easy thing to define Original as oldest printed set with the lowest collector number

Please make this change. With all the new printings its making me want to move to a new site having all the new stuff be default.

Another upvote has been added! Trying to make theme decks, and having to manually shift to the original printing is incredibly annoying

Please do this!!

I cannot stand alt arts because the majority of them are impossible to read and that’s before getting into colorblindness. Please allow a default of “oldest” or “first” printing

PLEASE because it always defaults to a “different name” version if one exists, because nobody wants those versions so they are the cheapest

Would love to see this :)

At least an option to add a version that has the the real name of the card would be awesome!!! It’s so frustrating wondering why a card isn’t in my decklist, only to find out its actually in the list as “Daffy Duck’s Dilema” or some other stupid alternate name

Whipped this up real quick for the folks that want the oldest or newest printings of their deck. Free tier database stuff, so she is a little slow, but she’ll get the job done. This is just a stopgap until Moxfield finishes up the feature request, which will be much more elegant. Oh, and the feature request is in progress now, so I’ll update this. :)

Really happy to see you work on this :) I am fairly certain you know this, but wanted to offer a bit of nuance to the spirit of this feature request. With recent sets, multiple versions of a card are released simultanously. I think users who want the oldest version would also likely prefer the default frame (scryfall is:default) over extended border, borderless, promo, etc. Thank you :)

it frustrates me when I search for a card name but what gets added is a renamed, re-skinned UB card and I have to figure out what on earth this other card is named so I can change it to what I actually typed and wanted.

@aquaone
A fix for the names… Click your profile pic in the upper right -> account settings -> Decks -> scroll down to the 2nd to last option and select “Ignore card flavor names” & save settings.

You’ll still get the annoying new UB arts for now, but the card names in the decklist will be the actual card names.

This is the change that I currently desire the most. I have tons of Premodern decks on Moxfield, and also in my Commander decks I generally go for the first printings. And at the moment I have to change the cards one by one…

What help do you guys need to get this done? Its infuriating being a web dev with 12 years experience knowing how powerful these new coding models are and this is 100% an issue that will only be exacerbated as time goes on.

Aangs shelter, Porom’s Silence Magic, Donnie’s Bo, Tower of Cirith Ungol, every single one of these is from a different UB set and these are some of the most played cards in literally all of Magic: The Gathering and I doubt anyone knows these cards by name. It also gets more confusing when you have UB characters with Universes Within cards that are just as confusing because the generic UW art gives you no clue about what the card does. Also they’re all random people who just happen to be spiders.

Every new UB set has even more confusing reprints of cards that for some reason are set to default as both the name of the card in your deck list if you didn’t change a random user setting and the art that is almost always full art with text that is almost secret lair levels of illegible.

Is there a github where I can submit a PR or something?

Might it be possible to implement this in a way that lets you select “Update to Oldest,” but also “Update to Oldest Eighth Edition Frame” and “Update to Oldest Magic 2015 Frame,” if applicable?

These options would refer to the major card frame updates WotC has done in the past. I personally prefer the oldest “Magic 2015 card frame” cards, then the oldest “Eighth Edition card frame” cards, then the oldest “old card frame” cards, but I do like the original artwork.

What I don’t like about my own suggestion is that both of these options could have multiple candidates, while “Update to Oldest,” “Update to Cheapest,” and “Update to Preferred” each have one candidate. This makes me wonder whether this is the right place for this potential addition.

I thought I’d post my suggestion in this thread since it’s already in progress and somewhat related, but it might fit better as a new feature request or as an addition to “Preferred Printings.”
